Hospital Shift Scheduling Experience
I designed a shift scheduling experience for nurse managers to create shift openings for potential nurse candidates to fill, with the ability to view, edit, and cancel shifts.

The Challenge
Our customer was a nurse staffing agency that hired nurses for per diem shifts at local hospitals. The hospitals were their clients, and nurse managers at the hospitals needed a tool to create shift openings in a list view and calendar view, view/edit/cancel shifts, view past shifts, view the nurse profile of the nurse working the shift, and create/use shift templates the user could reuse for quick scheduling.
Stakeholder Interviews
I worked with several client stakeholders, including the co-founders, VP of Client Success, and VP of Clinical Services. I interviewed them to understand what the user needs were so I could design the most useful and intuitive experience possible.
Designs
Prototype: Viewing and Canceling a Shift
Prototype: Posting a Shift
Outcome
I researched and proposed a calendar integration to speed up development time, and it was a huge success. We were able to develop the experience in half the time it would have taken to build a custom solution. Overall, the visual calendar was very intuitive and easy to use, and mirrored the UX of other familiar calendar tools, such as Google and Apple Calendars.
Next Steps
The next steps for the app would be to build out the Nurse Profile feature. Interviews with the users and SMEs suggested that the nurse managers viewing the filled shift details would want to see more of the nurse’s qualifications and experience.
